Types of Air Conditioning System
Types of Air Conditioning Unit
Glossary
The different types of systems available are:
All of our air conditioning systems are supplied by the worlds leading manufacturers.
Split air conditioning By far the most common form of air conditioning systems that are installed, referred to as 'split' systems because they comprise an indoor unit (mounted on a wall, ceiling or floor) which re-circulates the air in the room, cooling it or heating it to your requirements. The indoor unit is connected to an outdoor unit (condenser), by a pair of small diameter copper pipes covered in an insulating jacket. The heat removed from the room is dissipated to the atmosphere by the outdoor condenser. When heat is required, the system will run in reverse, taking heat from the outdoor condenser and transferring it to the indoor unit.
Multi-split air conditioning Operating in the same way as the 'split' system, the 'multi-split' system enables a number of indoor units to be individually controlled from a single outdoor unit. This is ideal when outdoor space is at a premium.
VRF Systems Variable Refrigerant Flow systems are one of the most recent and sophisticated evolutions of the 'split' systems. The refrigerant flow is varied using either an inverter controlled variable speed compressor, or multiple compressors of varying capacity which respond to changes in the cooling or heating requirement within the building.
This is ideal where there are a multiple of rooms as the indoor units can be connected to a single outdoor unit. The outdoor unit is constructed to respond proportionately to the number of indoor units operating, each being controlled for heating or cooling. This type of system is suited for commercial applications.
Simultaneous heating and cooling is possible and the system permits long refrigerant pipe lengths. It is available as a heat pump, cooling only or inverter heat pump. This is the ultimate in flexibility, individual indoor unit temperature can be changed independently, allowing personal choice as indoor and outdoor conditions change. A VRF system offers the solution to indoor climate control with unrivalled flexibility and energy efficiency.
Mobile/Portable Air Conditioners This is air conditioning in its most affordable and simplest form. Mobile or portable air conditioning units are available in a selection of different types and sizes. They comprise of a unit (about the size of a small refrigerator) that re-circulates the air in the room, cooling it or heating it as required. The heat removed from the room is then transferred to the outside of the building in one of two ways. It is either blown from the unit via a 'tumble drier' type flexible plastic tube, or by means of a small outdoor unit (condenser) linked to the room unit by a length of flexible refrigerant hose. Please Note! They should not be thought of as a long term solution.

The different types of air conditioning units are:
Wall or Floor Mounted Units Wall or Floor Mounted Units are ideal for many different applications such as homes, restaurants and offices. Our installers will mount these at the optimum level from floor to ceiling. The air conditioning systems are available with a heating option and remote control. These systems can be connected to one single outdoor unit with multiple indoor units running indoors. Ceiling or Ceiling Suspended Units are used primarily where floor or wall space is at a shortage, these are ideal for commercial or domestic use. They are also very quiet in operation and can be mounted directly onto the ceiling or suspended from the ceiling. These systems are operated via keypad remote controls or wall-mounted control panels.
Floor standing Units Installed against a wall or recessed in the wall or beneath a window sill.
Wall Mounted Units Wall mounted units with inverter technology enable the unit to start on a low electrical current but all the while still delivering the desired cooling-heating capacity. All units come with remote controls - swing louvres function to distribute the cool air around the room evenly and plasma filtration which help rooms with smoky atmosphere or youngsters with asthma -hay fever to breathe cleaner filtered air. There are also different styles of indoor units - not just the usual cream looking original units.
Flexi type Can be fitted on either the ceiling or the lower part of a wall.
Concealed flexi type Designed to be installed directly on the ground or in a false ceiling.
Ceiling Mounted Units Mounted into the suspended ceiling, these systems are ideal for any commercial premises. The space saving design and smooth, clean lines make them a popular choice for many offices and shops. Concealed Units
Cassettes The space saving design of the cassette is perfect for shops, restaurants or offices and commercial premises, leaving you maximum floor and wall space. All that you will see within your shop or office is the fascia. These units are ceiling mounted usually within a suspended ceiling. Designed to be installed into most types of suspended ceiling, the standard cassette is ideal for business and commercial premises. All cassette models benefit from multi-directional air flow systems, allowing conditioned air to be distributed from two, three or four aspects of the unit. For ease of use, cassette systems can be linked together on one remote control, rather than have many controllers spread around the premises. According to the model supplied the controls are either by remote keypad or wall-mounted control panel. Again, all are available with heating mode as an inexpensive optional extra.
Concealed ceiling unit Fits into most false ceilings, with only the suction and discharge grilles visible. It is both lightweight and compact in design. The position of the individual air discharge grilles can be altered, and is quiet when operating.
Ceiling mounted corner unit Ceiling mounted corner cassette, integrated in the false ceiling. Optimum air flow conditions are created by either downward air discharge, frontal discharge or a combination of both
2-way blow ceiling mounted unit 2-way blow ceiling mounted cassette, integrated in the false ceiling. Blows air into 2 directions, it is quiet when operating and gives uniform air distribution.
4-way blow ceiling mounted unit 4-way blow ceiling mounted cassette, integrated in the false ceiling. It is both compact and lightweight. The air can be discharged in any of 4 directions, there is also the possibility to shut off one or two flaps for an installation in a corner.
600x600 cassette unit 4-way blow ceiling mounted cassette, integrated in the false ceiling. It fits perfectly in the space of a 600 x 600 tiles Compact and lightweight. The air can be discharged in any of 4 directions, there is also the possibility to shut off one or two flaps for an installation in a corner.
950x950 cassette unit 4-way blow ceiling mounted cassette, integrated in the false ceiling. It fits perfectly in the space of a 950 x 950 tiles Compact and lightweight. . The air can be discharged in any of 4 directions, there is also the possibility to shut off one or two flaps for an installation in a corner.
Suspended, NO false ceilings
Under ceiling units These units are mounted just under the ceiling so if there wasn’t enough room in the false ceiling or that wasn’t an option under ceiling units could solve that problem. Ideal for private or commercial premises particularly where floor or wall space is at a premium. The indoor unit is connected to an outdoor condenser mounted outside either at the back of the property or on a flat roof somewhere convenient, depending on the size of the area several indoor units can be connected to one single outdoor condenser giving greater flexibility. Air flow can be directed horizontally, parallel to the ceiling and far away from the room occupants for non intrusive, natural air distribution. They are very quiet in operation and can be mounted directly onto the ceiling or suspended from it at a desired height. Heating modes are available as an inexpensive optional extra and the units are operated by either keypad remote controls or wall-mounted control panels.
Ceiling suspended If no false ceiling is available this unit can be installed directly to the ceiling.
4-way blow ceiling suspended To be fitted on either the ceiling or the lower part of the wall.
Ducted Systems Ducted air conditioning is the quietest and one of the most versatile of all systems. It is often the most practical choice for large areas where air distribution is beyond the capability of normal "split" units. The grilles can be placed virtually anywhere you wish and will blend unobtrusively with any interior decor. These grilles allow uniform temperature distribution in large or heavily partitioned areas. These systems can be concealed within the ceiling void and can heat/cool over large areas as the air is carried to ceiling mounted diffusers via ductwork above the ceiling. All systems have the option of heat mode in addition to standard cooling only and new technologies mean that they are extremely quiet when running and have improved energy savings when running too.
